A ”Y” Girl in France Letters
By Katherine Shortall
A ”Y” Girl in France Letters of Katherine Shortall. These letters were published in 1919 by the mother of Katherine Shortall. She had been so impressed by their content and the evidence that they were hastily scribbled in whatever and on whatever came to hand that she felt their publication would help to preserve the spirit of helping everyone that so pervaded the YMCA movement of that time.
‘Y’ or Yankee girls were members of the YMCA and posted to France in large numbers to run ‘canteens’. These were places of rest and entertainment for the troops, and the girls worked tirelessly.
